Precision Planting And Fertilizing Support

Area farmers are showing increased interest in tailoring their crop practices to specific field conditions in an effort to optimize their profit and minimize environmental impact.

Thompsons Limited agronomist Mike Wilson says that means different seeding rates in different soil types and conditions.

“Make a better decision later in the season on how much we need, if it has been wet and (growth) looks good we’ll apply more if it has been dry and yields are going to be less we’ll save our money and put less on,” he says. “Also we are doing a better job for the environment we are not over applying we are not wasting fertilizer.”

He says newly designed equipment makes it easier to judge the nutrient needs of the soil and to apply fertilizer when crops are more mature.
