crop production and marketing.

2014/15 Pulse Acres – Fertilizer and Logistics will be Keys to Watch

While the weather may feel like January and not March, April 24 is not that far away. That is the date that Statistics Canada (StatsCan) will release their first estimate at acres. Agriculture Canada (Ag Canada) is usually the first federal agency out with an estimate in mid-January, however they never deviate very far from trendline, and have witnessed large differences in their estimates once the first official estimate is released in April.

Fertilizer prices may have a dramatic effect on pulse acres this year. Urea (46-0-0) that was sold in November at $460/tonne is now being quoted as high as $795/tonne in southern Alberta for a 73% increase in three months. Phosphorous has not registered the same increase but is higher just the same. It has climbed from $570/tonne in November to $725/tonne at the end of February (+27%). Some of the increase is related to transportation issues and the ability to secure product for spring deliveries. Retailers are pricing product in their sheds as it may be the only product they receive in a timely manner. While swing acres have become an anomaly over the past few years with rotations firmly entrenched from one year to the next, it could change quickly with a lack of fertilizer supply.
