Saskatchewan Ranchers Win Award For Environmental Stewardship

Saskatchewan Ranchers Miles and Sheri Anderson have won the Canadian Beef Industry Award for Environmental Stewardship.

The national award was presented last night in Calgary as part of the Canadian Beef Industry Conference.

The Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes the management efforts of the Anderson ranch in providing an excellent grazing operation that also provides a safe habitat for 12 different species at risk animals as Miles explains.

"You have to use your grass and your land but you also have to leave some. You kind of save some for next year so when the drought comes, cattle will have something to eat for next year and the grass standing there will also give a place for birds and animals to live in. The old story was you take half and leave half and that is probably not far from the rule that we live by."

The Anderson Ranch runs about 600 head of cattle on land next door to the Grasslands National Park.

Miles notes with the way they manage their grassland it provides habitat for 12 different species at risk including the Great Sage Grouse, Short Horn Lizard and Swift Fox.
