Syngenta Introduces Two New Top-Performing High-End Quality Spring Wheat Varieties For The Pacific Northwest

  • SY Coho and SY Selway now available as certified seed
  • Planting certified seed varieties is critical to helping wheat start strong

As 2016 spring wheat variety selection continues in the Pacific Northwest, Syngenta reminds growers to implement proactive management plans and select varieties with consistent performance and superior genetics. Adding to a proven portfolio of AgriPro® brand wheat varieties, Syngenta introduces SY Coho and SY Selway hard red spring wheat varieties.

“The Syngenta Cereals Research facility located in Cheney, Wash., continues to expand its scope to maximize grower profitability,” said Jim Helmerick, Syngenta senior wheat breeder in the Pacific Northwest. “These two new varieties provide producers with top-performing characteristics, including high protein content, test weights and yield.”
  • SY Coho: Excellent yield potential on irrigated acres or high rainfall areas and tolerance to stripe rust makes SY Coho an excellent choice for high management areas. SY Coho has good test weight, high protein content and very good end-use quality. This variety is best suited for eastern Washington, western Montana and Idaho.
  • SY Selway: This semi-dwarf variety is bred for dryland areas with 15 inches of rain or less. SY Selway has a great disease package, with excellent stripe rust tolerance, as well as tolerance to Fusarium head scab. This variety has very good end-use quality, strong protein content and test weight. It is best suited for northern Oregon, eastern Washington and northern Idaho. SY Selway is not recommended for irrigated acres.

Other AgriPro brand spring wheat varieties for the Pacific Northwest that will be offered in 2016 include Bullseye, Cabernet, SY605 CL, SY Basalt and Dayn.

As spring wheat growers prepare for the upcoming planting season, Syngenta recommends implementing an integrated approach to crop management. Planting quality certified seed varieties and incorporating good planting practices, such as residue management, proper seeding rates and seed treatments, are critical to helping wheat start strong.

By choosing a quality seed treatment like CruiserMaxx® Vibrance® Cereals insecticide/fungicide, protection begins the moment seeds are planted. As the season progresses, scouting and applying foliar fungicides become important.
