Talking Soil Structure To Prevent Run Off

The Manager of Water Resources and Stewardship Services for the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority says conservation and agriculture are a natural fit.

Both Saugeen Valley and the Maitland Valley Consrvation Authority participated in this week’s Soil Health and Cover Crop Information Day at the Parrish and Heimbecker Elevator in Amberley.

Jo-Anne Harbinson explains they worked on several events with Parrish and Heimbecker in the past.

This time, her presentation was about soil health with an emphasis on soil structure and how that can prevent runoff.

She points out healthy soil supports good water quality by preventing nutrients from running off into the lake, but also holds the soil on the land and that results in better crops for the farmer.

Harbinson adds the goal is that building organic matter and good soil health and structure will also result in better yields and that will encourage more efforts towards maintaining overall soil health.
