The Grape Growers of Ontario congratulate Potter Settlement Wines of Hastings County, Ontario

The Grape Growers of Ontario congratulate Potter Settlement Wines of Hastings County, Ontario on being invited to present their award-winning wines to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (pictured below with Potter Settlement Wines owner Sandor Johnson). Prime Minister Trudeau was presented with Potter Settlement’s 2016 Marquette and 2016 Frontenac.

“It is always a proud moment when a member of our industry is recognized for their hard work,” says Matthias Oppenlaender, Chair, Grape Growers of Ontario. “Potter Settlement Wines has succeeded with two grape varieties, Marquette and Frontenac, in a challenging location. Their ability to find alternative grape production options using sustainable methods is commendable.”

The family-owned winery was the first in Hastings County, and is one of the northernmost vineyards in the province. Potter Settlement Wines was recently awarded an Intervin International Wine Award for their 2016 Marquette red wine. This is one of the first times that the Marquette variety has been recognized with an international wine award.

“We're very proud of this moment as our little winery is the first to pioneer Marquette and Frontenac in Ontario,” says Johnson. “This is a big win for the Potter Settlement team and the Municipality of Tweed and Hastings County. I hope it will increase recognition for these grapes that were pioneered here in Ontario.”
