The Heat Is On

Bioheat® increasing in New York, raising farmer profitability

As the temperatures in New York go down, the thermostats are going up. And soon, so will the amount of biodiesel the Big Apple uses in its Bioheat®.

A recently passed mandate will raise the amount of biodiesel in heating oil from 2 percent to 5 percent by October 2017.

“We are very excited for the mandate because it means we’re going to move to an even cleaner fuel,*” says Rocco Lacertosa, chief executive officer of the New York Oil Heating Association. “We have had the two percent blending standard in effect since 2012, and it’s been successful without any issues. Now the amount of biodiesel we use will continue to grow incrementally over the next 20 years.”

The blend level will increase to 10 percent in 2025, 15 percent in 2030 and 20 percent in 2034. This is good news for U.S. soybean farmers as continued growth in the biodiesel industry provides additional value to soybean oil.

“It would be great to eventually get to 100-percent biodiesel used in heating oil someday,” says soy checkoff farmer-leader Gregg Fujan, a soybean farmer from Weston, Neb. “But for now, even at low levels, Bioheat should help increase U.S. soybean farmers’ profitability.”
