The USDA's Prospective Plantings Report, released Friday, shows an increase in soybean while wheat and corn are down.
US corn planted area for all purposes in 2017 is estimated at 90 million acres, down 4 percent or 4 million acres from last year.
US soybean planted area is estimated at a record high 89.5 million acres, up 7 percent from last year.
All wheat planted area for 2017 in the US is estimated at 46.1 million acres, down 8 percent from 2016. This represents the lowest total planted area for the United States since records began in 1919.
Brian Voth, president of IntelliFARM Inc., says those number aren't a big surprise.
"If you look at where wheat prices have been, particularily in the US for the last couple of years, the market's been saying, 'don't grow wheat'," he commented. "You're finally starting to see that economic sign starting to show up in these acreage numbers now."
