Water Regulatory Database

The Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO) were approved for up to $20,000, under Growing Forward 2 (GF2), to document water regulations that affect farm land. This information will be compiled into a database that will serve as a resource for farmers, a base from which communications materials can be developed, and a source of information for the development of policy.

This project is being executed in three phases. First, a database system is being selected to capture the data and enable future analysis. Farm scenario development is taking place during the second phase, to identify the range and scope of water related legislation, regulations and policies affecting farmers. The third phase will include the researching of all water-related legislation including Source Water Protection Plans, regulations and policies affecting farmers.

To date, this project is progressing well. The data is being organized in Excel format, which offers ease of access and manipulation. Once the research phase is completed, the file will be uploaded to the CFFO website. The file will contain a listing of provincial and federal legislation and relevant regulations; definitions; prohibitions; individual summary pages for each legislation and a summary page of farm situations that are regulated. The consultants are currently building farm scenarios based on completed interviews with three key environmental groups. Further farm scenario analysis with CFFO Directors is scheduled for early March. The third phase of the project covering research on water-related legislation is approximately 50% completed. Thirty provincial and seven federal legislations and relevant regulations have been identified.

This project is funded in part through GF2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The Agricultural Adaptation Council assists in the delivery of GF2 in Ontario.
