Demand and Sales Activity
Temperatures were very cold this past week, which limited activity at auction s. C ompared to the previous week, small square bales were 6% higher , large square bale prices were up 14 % , the majority of sales were premium quality hay , and l arge round bale prices were up 6 % . Sales activity was light , but quality hay sold for a good pr ice .
F or Nebraska , compared to the last report hay sold steady with weakness on the large round bales of alfalfa . For Iowa , all classes and grades of hay sold steady, though cold and snow reduced attendance . Cold weather and snow increased demand for s traw.
In South Dakota , hay prices were steady . There was l ight trading in the market because of cold weather and snow.
For Missouri , hay movement continues to be limited although there we re s o m e hay sales. Artic weather this past week and moderate to heavy hay supplies continue a light demand for hay .
In Southwest Minnesota , hay prices were steady compared to last week with limited quality alfalfa hay sales . F or Illinois , the Arthur sale had moderate demand for heavy offerings .
In Wisconsin, hay pr ices were steady too strong for premium and good hay, with lower prices for lower quality hay. Cold weather limited hay quantity at sale s . Straw was in good demand this week.
Straw pric es in the Midwest averaged $ 3. 30 per s mall square bale (range of $ 2 . 6 0 to $ 5.00 ); $ 4 7 . 5 0 per large square bale (range of $ 44 .00 to $ 5 0 .00 ) ; and $ 4 5 . 5 0 per large round bale (range of $ 29 .00 to $ 6 5 .0 0 ). Compared to the previous week, straw pric e s for small square bales price was steady. For la rge sq uare bales, prices w ere 2 % lower , while large round bale s w ere 8 % higher.
