With Fall On The Horizon, Harvest Progress Slows

Harvest progress is slowing across the province as wet weather, shorter days and heavy morning dews are having an impact on the number of acres that can be taken off the field.

Manitoba Agriculture's Pam de Roquigny says some producers have been done their cereal crops for a few weeks, while other are still at it, or have switched to canola because it's drier.

She notes harvest is also underway on some long-season crops.

"We're seeing producers get into soybeans, which is great," said de Roquigny. "Definitely some of the earlier seeded, early maturing varieties, we're having those fields taken off. Our other longer season crops, such as sunflowers and grain corn, they continue towards maturity. Some acres have definitely reached physiological maturity, so now they're just drying down to points where producers can begin harvest of those crops."
