Highest Yield or Most Profit Per Acre?

Report this Message
Do you think they are one in the same, or do you think there is a point of diminishing return that doest make chasing these yields worthwhile. Is technology for technologs sake a good thing or are we being consumed by something we not aware of yet. Kinda wondering where you see farming headed.

I think we as farmers, are getting stuppider every day. We listen to seed sales reps., to increase populations for higher yields. Fertilizer sales people pushing their products for 200 bu. corn yields. Agriculture specialists telling us we need 60 bu. soybeans through better planting equipment, and insect sprays. We do all the things they tell us, and we watch our yields go upslightly and we watch the markets PLUMMIT as Traders in Chigago say we have a surplus of grains.
Which would be better - Cut our input costs by $100.00 per acre and watch our yield on corn drop by 20 bu. per acre and see corn sell for ( you tell me ) $5.50 per bu. or more? Corn at 200 bu / ac and $3.50 = $700.00 per acre or Corn at 180 bu. / acre and $5.50 = $990.00 per acre and $100.00 per acre less input costs. Even if the yield dropped to 150 bu. per acre, the return would be $825.00 per acre and still the lower input costs. Look what happened when the final yield report came out, and the yield was up slightly - markets crashed.
Soybeans would react the same way.

Farmers cannot keep overproducing to feed the world without getting paid to do so. We cannot keep producing at a loss just to please all the other groups that are making money off our purchases. If farmers were to make a reasonab ly profit every year, then there would be no need for farm groups to keep hounding the Goverments for funding to support farmers. These budgets could be used to purchase food for the not so fortunate, and it would be a better image for the farmer to the rest of the public as not haviing to keep hounding for farm support programs and handout.
We all need to b e together on this one.

I agree we farmers are getting stupider. I work for a farm supply /grain elevator aswell as farm and the B.S that is told to customers and practices that we preach to customers are to make money for the company the the farmers we are tobe trying to help. I am respected for taking the approach of I wont recommend it if I wont do it my self, Yes I give up yield to lower my inputs but what matters to me is my profit margine which I can achieve with less inputs and a little lower yields. I also ask the question of why are we stupid enough to think because we had higher the average yields and strong prices this year why would you assume we will see this next year. So why are we turning around and lowering a profit margines by running around trying to get more land driving the price up another $20 or so a acre. Come on get real we already know all our inputs will be up 10-20% so why are we driveing the land cost up more too!! We need to get our heads check!!

First let me say, I am not a farmer. I found this website, because I am trying to start a small farm. I ojnly have 45 acres. That being said, My humble opinion is that your responses to the question posted are right on target. From what I have learned over the past three years, reading and researching everything I can about farming, The seed, fertilizer, and equipment Companies are the ones making the most profits. Farmers need to get more for their work. More money, and more respect. Just my opinion. Jim

Will be growing corn in the tropics. Land was dormant for over 50 years. Was used for cattle grazing in the past.

Not for profit venture in remote area. Plowing equipment available for tilling land.

Would like to know what is best variety of corn for human consumption and also yield per acre.

Would also like info on pumpkin and watermelon.

Smal farm is 15 acres.
