Pork producers to serve ‘free’ pork lunch in Des Moines Jan. 28

Des Moines residents will be able to enjoy a free pork lunch and help the Iowa Food Bank at the same time Jan. 28.

The Iowa Pork Producers Association will host its 11th annual Winter Pork Picnic Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Capital Square in downtown Des Moines and the public is invited.

Iowa pork producers will brave the winter weather to grill and serve 2,500 ground pork and bacon burgers to celebrate the Iowa pork industry. Consumers also will receive chips, pop, ice cream and samples of other pork products.

Attendees also can win prizes and meet representatives of the Iowa Chops hockey team.

IPPA will team up with the Food Bank of Iowa in asking for donations at the Winter Pork Picnic to help feed Iowa's hungry. IPPA will generously match all donations up to $5,000. All proceeds will be donated directly to the Food Bank of Iowa.

The promotion is held in conjunction with the Iowa Pork Congress as a way of saying "thank you" to Iowans who support the pork industry by purchasing and consuming pork.

Companies participating in the Winter Pork Picnic include Fareway Stores, Webster City Custom Meats, Johnsonville, Sara Lee, Cookies Food Products, Frito Lay, Pepsi Americas, Wells Blue Bunny and Edy's Ice Cream.
