Farmers Can Soak Up Irrigation Information at Winter Workshops


Farmers, irrigators and agribusiness personnel can learn all about managing irrigated corn at winter workshops to be held in February at four locations in northern Indiana.

“The presentations are designed to help participants improve their bottom line by better managing their irrigation systems,” said Gene Matzat, educator, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service LaPorte County. “Presentations will range from agronomic practices and nutrient management to irrigation basics and cost-share programs.”

An introduction and overview of irrigation specific to each location also will be presented by the local meeting coordinator.

Specific topics and speakers include:

* “Agronomic Practices for Irrigated Corn,” Bob Nielsen, Purdue Extension corn specialist.

* “Nutrient Management for Irrigated Corn,” Jim Camberato, Purdue Extension fertility specialist.

* “Irrigation Basics for Corn Production,” Lyndon Kelley, Michigan State University/Purdue Extension irrigation specialist.

* “Irrigation Related Cost-Share Programs for Farmers,” presented by the local Natural Resources Conservation Service or Soil and Water Conservation District representative.

The workshops will be presented at the following locations and times:

* Goshen – Thurs., Feb. 18, 1-4 p.m. (EST), Martin Room, Elkhart County Community Center, Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Gate 2, 17746-D County Road 34

* South Bend – Thurs., Feb. 18, 6-9 p.m. (EST), St. Joseph County Farm Bureau Building Meeting Room, 5605 U.S. 31 South

* Plymouth – Fri., Feb. 19, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (EST), Marshall County Extension Office, 3rd Floor, 112 W. Jefferson St.

* Wanatah – Fri., Feb. 19, 1-4 p.m. (CST), Pinney-Purdue Ag Center, 11402 S. County Line Road

Participants should register to Purdue Extension LaPorte County by Feb. 16 and can do so by mailing the registration form to 2358 N. U.S. 35, LaPorte, or by calling 219-324-9407. Registration also can be done by e-mailing Matzat at ematzat@purdue.edu or by directly contacting any of the Purdue Extension offices in the counties hosting workshops.

Certified Crop Adviser Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available.
