NFU : GM Varieties Must Be Assessed For Market Harm

Paris, France — NFU President Terry Boehm said today from Paris, "It is time for Canadians to realize that some GM varieties have and will shut us out of key premium markets in the world." He continued, "It is only logical that before we allow the registration of GM varieties that we do a market analysis with regard to market consequences."   "No business would jeopardize its future by putting something on the market that could destroy its main product and market," he added.

Canada has been largely shut out of the European flax market because of contamination by a GM flax variety called FP-967 or Triffid. "The Canadian economy cannot survive if we lose major market sectors to a regulatory system designed to facilitate the introduction of GM varieties without proper analysis beyond the so-called science-based risk management system we have in place.  Risk management is a mathematical calculation of probability anyway. Why should an economic analysis which is also mathematically based be so scary and opposed by the biotech industry?" he asked.

Saskatchewan Regional Coordinator Glenn Tait pointed out that Bill C-474 seeks to ensure that market analysis takes place. "All Canadians and our MPs should support this Bill," he stated.
