Video: USDA Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report Analysis

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the bullish Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report on September 29. This report shows U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs as of September 1. All hogs and pigs inventory was 73.8 million head – down 1% from last year, but up 2% from June 1. Breeding inventory was 6.15 million head – down 1% from last year and down slightly from June 1. Market hog inventory was 67.6 million head – down 1% from last year and up 2% from last quarter. June-August 2022 pig crop was at 33.6 million head – down 1% from last year Sows farrowing during this period totaled 3.02 million head– down 1% from last year. The sows farrowed during this quarter represented 49 percent of the breeding herd. Altin Kalo, chief economist with Steiner Consulting Group, explained the specifics of the Hogs and Pigs report, how it is developed and what key factors USDA considers when estimating demand and availability.
