Covid-19: Message from CFFO’s New President

Apr 03, 2020
Hello, my name is Ed Scharringa, and I am the new president of the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario. I feel privileged to hold this position, and I pray that God will grant me and my fellow board members wisdom during this difficult period for our industry and nation.

Right now, the sustainability of Canada’s agricultural system is vital. Our farmers need to make their payments, prepare for planting, safeguard the health of family and staff, and much, much more.

I have been speaking with several CFFO members over the past week, many of whom work in horticulture. This is a critical time for these growers, and we are working hard to keep their concerns about temporary foreign workers top of mind for government.

In the longer run, I foresee food security to be a major concern for Canada. Today, we are experiencing challenges that seemed far removed in recent years: disruptions in the supply system, trouble with border crossings, and especially fear-based hoarding of food supplies. This is a moment when our country is paying close attention to the way food makes it to the dining table. We are grateful for the commitment of government to meet the needs of our farmers, so that our strong food system remains that way.

If you are a member looking for resources and information, you can visit CFFO's Covid-19 Information Page, where we are compiling updates and information on labour, financial supports, animal care and more.

Perhaps most importantly, this is a time check in on neighbours and family members who may be experiencing anxiety and fear. You can find information on farmer mental health on our website, as well.

Times are difficult for many, but as Christians, we know that, in all things, we can put our trust in the Lord. Scripture gives us words of encouragement such as these, from Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
