10% of the Cows, Half the Beef Exported: How Canada Punches Above Its Weight

With just under 3.5 million beef cows and a fed kill shy of 3 million head, Canada raises a fraction of North America’s cattle — but exports roughly half of what it produces as live cattle or beef. Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) General Manager Ryder Lee says Alberta–Saskatchewan cow country, Ontario and Alberta feeding hubs, and U.S. packing plants in Washington, Utah and Pennsylvania are tightly interlinked, making border access and science-based trade rules non-negotiable for producers on both sides. Raised on a commercial cow-calf operation in southern Saskatchewan — just 20 miles north of Montana — Lee grew up in what he describes as “cattle country.” After earning an animal science degree, he spent six years in agricultural sales with Dow AgroSciences before stumbling into cattle industry association work. He spent a decade in Ottawa doing policy lobbying, then served seven years as CEO of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association before joining CCA as General Manager three y

Beef & bison spared from proposed CFIA traceability rule changes

An update on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) proposed changes to traceability regulations was provided on a Tuesday night webinar hosted by the Saskatchewan Cattle Association. The proposed traceability rule changes were first announced late last year, but the reaction was swift and intense from the beef cattle community. Among the complaints from producers was the proposed additional reporting on cattle movement would be too burdensome. In response to the criticism, the CFIA paused the changes in January this year in order to get more feedback. Leading up to Tuesday, the Saskatchewan Cattle Association was holding open forum meetings around the province to get their own feedback from producers. The Canadian Cattle Association and Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association also did the same. Heather Brown, the CFIA National Manager of Humane Transport and Livestock Traceability Programs, was on the webinar. "The main messaging is really that CFIA has carefully considered t

We also urge officials to follow scientific guidance in any decisions affecting animal movements and regulatory responses to avoid causing economic harm that could be greater than the screwworm itself. We also ask that adequate resources be provided to combat this problem, which causes suffering in animals and creates risk for producers.

CFIA updates livestock traceability regulation direction

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced it will not proceed at this time with proposed cattle movement reporting requirements under its revised livestock traceability regulations. According to CFIA, updated traceability requirements for other livestock species will continue to progress, while proposed cattle and bison movement reporting requirements will not proceed as the agency continues discussions with industry. “Alberta Beef Producers appreciates CFIA’s commitment to working with producers and industry,” said Brad Dubeau, ABP’s General Manager. “This adjustment to timelines and open door to collaborative discussion gives the industry the opportunity to develop realistic, workable recommendations.” Traceability remains an important tool for supporting disease preparedness, emergency response, market access and confidence in Canadian beef. At the same time, traceability systems need to be science-based and practical, ensuring they don’t create unnecessary burdens

When artificial intelligence enters the feedyard

Dr. Luis Tedeschi provides insights on how precision nutrition and emerging tech could reshape ruminant systems The future of ruminant nutrition will be driven by far more than feed formulation alone, according to Dr. Luis Tedeschi of Texas A&M University. Speaking during the Ruminant Session at the 2026 Animal Nutrition Conference of Canada (ANCC), May 5-7 in Edmonton, Tedeschi outlined how artificial intelligence (AI), precision livestock farming and integrated crop-livestock systems are beginning to reshape the way producers think about cattle nutrition, sustainability and farm management. Tedeschi’s presentation, Nutrition as the Intelligent Nexus: Integrating Precision Farming into Sustainable Ruminant Systems, focused on how emerging technologies, including sensors, satellite imagery, AI machine learning and real-time monitoring systems, are enabling more responsive and individualized feeding strategies. “The shift from average-based to precision-based feeding is one of the
