Wheat Rises, Canola Production Hits Record High This Year: StatsCan

OTTAWA - Production of all varieties of wheat were up nationally this year over last, while canola production hit a record high.

Statistics Canada released its third and final production estimates for 2011.

It says farmers reported a decline in both corn and soybean crops.

But Prairie farmers reported canola production increased 10.7 per cent from 2010 to a record 14 million tonnes.

Canola production reached new highs in both Alberta (5.3 million tonnes) and Saskatchewan (seven million tonnes), while it declined 25.3 per cent in flood-ravaged Manitoba.

Total wheat production was up nine per cent, or 2.1 million tonnes, from 2010 to 25.3 million tonnes.

Farmers reported record yields for wheat in both Alberta and Saskatchewan.
