COLUMBIA, Mo. – AgDay and U.S. Farm Report’s Tyne Morgan will be the keynote speaker at the second annual Pearls of Production: Women in Agriculture workshop, Nov. 7-8.
Morgan will speak on “Working in a Man’s World” at the two-day event. A native of Lexington, Missouri, she holds a degree in agricultural journalism from the University of Missouri and was the 2006 Missouri State Fair queen. She is Farm Journal Media’s broadcast national reporter.
MU Extension, MU’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and Lincoln University sponsor the event.
The workshop provides leadership and hands-on opportunities for women in livestock production, said MU Extension swine specialist Marcia Shannon. “Programs like this are increasingly relevant in the modern livestock production market,” Shannon said. A recent USDA study shows that the number of women-operated farms tripled from 1978 to 2007.
The two-day workshop is held at Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Columbia. Topics include meat labeling and direct marketing, political advocacy impacts on Missouri agriculture, new technology, genomics, farm safety, animal health products, and livestock production. Pharmacy students from the University of Missouri-Kansas City will offers free health screenings.
“Down and dirty” hands-on demonstrations will be given on swine, small ruminants, beef and forages on the second day of the workshop.
