Beware Of Insects In Stored Grain

Looking back, there was a lot of insect concerns over the 2021 season.

John Gavloski is an entomologist with Manitoba Agriculture & Resource Development.

"We started with the flea beetles in canola being a major concern. Little bit of cutworm activity, although less than last year. Things seem to be dropping a little bit in the cutworm cycle fortunately. Diamondback moth became an issue in some areas in canola, mainly the eastern Interlake and central regions. Grasshoppers throughout the season in many areas were a concern. There were several insects that really did become larger insect concerns."

Gavloski had this advice for farmers heading into the fall and winter.

"One of the things that we often advise people on is, keep an eye on insects in your stored grain. Especially if we get rain during harvest. As you are taking your crops off, if they're coming off a bit on the wet side, you really need to watch for stored grain insects. One thing that we recommend is if you've got aeration in the bins, get that going in the cool evenings. Try to get the grain cooled off as quickly as you can."
