Canada Leads African Swine Fever Discussions In Paris

Canada's Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jaspinder Komal, is speaking in Paris at the World Organisation for Animal Health General Assembly this week about the disease killing pigs in Asia, Africa and parts of Europe, however it poses no risk to human health.

Komal will be presenting the framework developed at the first-ever international African Swine Fever forum held in Ottawa earlier this month, which outlines preventative measures and swift actions be taken if the disease enters the Americas region.

"This is not only an animal health issue," Komal said. "It's also a food security issue if this continues to grow, the challenges around availability of animal protein in the world."

He also presented to the Chief Veterinary Officers of the G7 countries last Friday in Paris about the results of the International ASF forum in Ottawa.

Komal believes Canada is very well positioned to keep African Swine Fever out.
