Canada Promotes Energy Efficiency as Key to Canada's Low-Carbon Economy

OTTAWA,  - Energy efficiency has benefits in our homes, neighbourhoods, environment, economy and wallets. Federal investments in innovative energy-efficient projects drive economic growth, contribute to our clean energy future and create high-quality jobs for Canadians.

The Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today announced changes to Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations to help Canadian homes and businesses save money by using more energy-efficient products.

The amendment will align Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations on key products, such as furnace fans and commercial refrigeration, with those of our largest trading partner, the United States, helping Canadian households and businesses adopt energy-efficient products and measures more easily. Amendment 14 is also estimated to result in an annual reduction of 1.54 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, helping Canada to deliver on its climate objectives.

Minister Morneau made the announcement at the official launch of Efficiency Canada, a new organization of stakeholders advocating to make Canada a global leader in energy efficiency. Billing itself as the voice of an energy-efficient economy in Canada, the organization debuted in Ottawa with Minister Morneau joining Canadian energy efficiency leaders to discuss regional progress toward meeting the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change targets.

Greater energy efficiency will help improve Canada's economy and environment by creating 118,000 jobs by 2030, boost our GDP by $356 billion over the next 12 years and save Canadian households an average of $114 a year.

Through Generation Energy, Canadians made it clear that clean energy solutions are not a luxury but a necessity for Canada's low-carbon future. Canada will continue to support clean energy projects that create jobs, support investment and industry competitiveness, advance our clean future and help realize our global climate change goals.
