CFO partners with nation-wide campaign encouraging Canadians to work towards a future without hunger

HAMILTON, ON – From coast to coast, September marks Hunger Action Month and Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) is proud to be this year’s leadership sponsor. This unique partnership stems from CFO’s long-standing relationship with the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) and through CFO’s food bank donation program – CFO Cares.

“We’re pleased to have CFO as our leadership sponsor for Hunger Action Month,” said Carolyn Stewart, Executive Director, OAFB. “The collaboration between our association and Chicken Farmers of Ontario has proven to be a real success. Together, we have worked to provide over 1 million chicken meals, and this is also significant because we know that fresh protein is what our food banks need the most.”

The Board’s CFO Cares program was established in 2015 to enable chicken farmers to donate fresh chicken to food banks in their local communities and across the province. CFO’s farmer-members grow chicken that is specifically designated to go into the food bank system. Through careful planning and logistics, CFO and OAFB determine which food banks have the greatest need at the time and the chicken is delivered accordingly.

“To me, it’s simple,” said Murray Opsteen, CFO Board Director and Chair of the CFO Cares Volunteer Working Group. “We’re farmers and our livelihood is wrapped-up in growing fresh food for people to eat. All Ontarians should have access to the chicken that we grow, and the CFO Cares program ensures that our chicken lands on plates of the people who need it the most.”

In addition to regular chicken deliveries, the team at CFO has ramped-up their efforts in support of Hunger Action Month. Today, local chicken farmers, members of the farmer-led CFO Cares Volunteer Working Group, and CFO staff have gathered at Hamilton Food Share to donate chicken and to help pack and sort food for the community. The CFO team was honoured to be joined by Member of Parliament for Hamilton East – Stoney Creek, Bob Bratina, Member of Provincial Parliament for Hamilton East – Stoney Creek, Paul Miller and City of Hamilton Mayor, Fred Eisenberger.
