Changes In Saskatchewan's Hog Industry

Maple Leaf Food has announced plans to buy pig farms in Central Saskatchewan from a group of companies known as Polar Pork.

The deal includes two nursery barns and two sow barns and is expected to close in June 2022

Maple Leaf says the acquisition will enhance their overall pig supply and substantially increase its pig production capacity in the province, with the new locations having the potential to add another 140,000 pigs to Maple Leaf Foods.

The company says they have plans to invest up to $27 million in the barns over time, inclusive of acquisition costs and capital investments to maximize capacity and add further animal care enrichments.

Dr. Jessica Risser, a senior technical consultant with the Elanco Swine Business Unit, recently spoke to The Pig Site’s Sarah Mikesell at the 2023 World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

“We've really worked on our portfolio this year and added quite a bit to it,” said Risser. “The first thing is Increxxa 25, which is a new addition to the portfolio. “

Elanco already had the Increxxa 100 milligram and now it has added Increxxa 25 which is an added benefit for producers. It is another injectable antibiotic with a different formulation that makes it easier for the producer to administer to younger pigs.
