Calgary, AB — Western Canadian Wheat Growers are pleased that Canada has given Royal Assent to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). As the fifth country to ratify the agreement, the CPTPP only needs one more partner country to ratify before it comes into force. Once the sixth country ratifies the agreement, virtually all exports to the member countries are tariff free.
“The Wheat Growers has long supported the CPTPP and similar free trade agreements. Free trade is in the best interest of our members. We can feed the world if we have access to it,” stated Levi Wood, President.
To date, Mexico, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand have also ratified the agreement. It is anticipated that Australia will sign next. The remaining countries are Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru and Vietnam.
