Manitoba Pork Chair Says More Local Processing Needed

The recent decline in pork prices was discussed last week at Manitoba Pork's fall meetings.

Chair George Matheson said increased processing is needed to help fix the problem.

"You can negotiate when you've got more than one buyer," he commented. "Producers in Manitoba are not in that position right now. I'm not saying processors are being unfair in their pricing, all I'm saying is we'd be in a much better position if we had, like in the U.S., many processors."

Matheson says there is a lot of interest in new barn construction, especially in the western part of the province.

Meetings were held last week in Portage la Prairie and Niverville.
