The United States Department of Agriculture released its latest Crop Progress Report for the week ending May 19, 2019 on Monday. The report indicates that nationally, some moderate progress was made in both corn and soybean planting which has continued to lag behind its normal planting rate due to persistently wet conditions. This week, the US corn crop is 49 percent planted versus 39 last week and 80 the five-year average. Emergence is at 19 percent this week, compared to 10 percent last week and 49 on average. Prevent plant deadlines are quickly approaching as we near the end of the month for the western Corn Belt. Soybeans planted is at 19 percent, compared to 9 percent last week. Emerged is at 5 percent, well behind 24 last year and 17 the average. The forecast calls for more wet weather in the days ahead. At present, the US winter wheat crop is 54 percent headed with a condition rating of 66 percent good to excellent, 26 fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Looking at our three-state region across the Southern Plains -
In Oklahoma, winter wheat headed reached 95 percent, unchanged from the previous year but down 2 points from normal. Wheat’s condition rates this week 88 percent good to excellent, 9 fair and 3 poor to very poor. Corn planted reached 55 percent, down 23 points from last year and 25 points from normal. Corn emerged reached 45 percent, down 12 points from the previous year and down 20 points from normal. Sorghum planted reached 13 percent, down 16 points from the previous year and down 25 points from normal. Soybeans planted reached 30 percent, down 5 points from the previous year but on par with normal. Soybeans emerged reached 1 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 6 points from normal. Cotton planted reached 10 percent, down 28 points from the previous year and down 19 points from normal. Pasture and range condition is rated at 70 percent good to excellent, 26 fair and 4 percent poor to very poor.
In Kansas, winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 30 fair, 46 good, and 14 excellent. Headed was 61 percent, behind 67 last year, and well behind 83 for the five-year average. Corn planted was 61 percent, behind 80 both last year and average. Emerged was 37 percent, behind 53 both last year and average. Soybeans planted was 17 percent, well behind 47 last year, and behind 29 average. Emerged was 6 percent, behind 19 last year, and near 10 average. Sorghum planted was 3 percent, near 7 last year and 6 average. Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 26 fair, 57 good, and 14 excellent.
