Stock Growers Ready To Put 2020 Behind Us

The President of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers says 2020 is a year everyone would like to put in their rearview mirror.

Kelcy Elford says COVID was just one of the challenges for producers in the beef industry faced this year.

"We saw packing plants shut down for a period of time creating a backlog. It was a dry start in some areas to the Spring, which made for adverse growing conditions. Then we got some timely rains,
and again in some areas it was quite dry for the fall."

He says along with that producers were dealing with market volatility and increased premiums for WLPIP.

Elford says they want to commend the Ministry of Agriculture and Saskatchewan Government for propping up the premiums when they needed it the most after March with the market uncertainty.

"To insure your operating costs is a tool that is essential I believe in this business. The government recognized that and we applaud them for coming to the table and helping with WLPIP."

Elford says once again 2020 showed the resiliency of livestock producers.
