18 A precision livestock management company is providing farmers with a new tool available for the 2027 grazing season. Nofence, headquartered in Molde, Norway, and with its US operations in St. Paul, Minnesota, has released its N3 virtual fencing cattle collar. The company also has a presence in Canada, but that is only for research purposes. However, it said it does have plans to launch commercially in Canada within the next year. This new N3 collar builds on 10 years of Nofence’s virtual fencing expertise and is a stronger, lighter option than predecessors such as the 2.5. “Nofence was founded by livestock producers in Norway, and the product is continually built to meet what livestock producers are wanting and asking for,” Eric Yates, National Sales Director with Nofence, told the Farms.com Precision Agriculture Digital Digest. While bovines are the main audience for the N3, a version of the collar is also available for sheep (and lamb) producers. The N3 and the overall Nofence system use GPSenabled collars and a smartphone app. Once the solar-charged collar is on an animal and synced with the app, farmers can immediately begin tracking and managing livestock movement. “This is real time GPS tracking that allows them to know where the animal is at all times,” Yates pointed out. “And when a producer wants to contain or exclude (animals) from an area, they would draw a virtual fence on their smartphone device. It doesn’t matter the topography, or the terrain, there are zero limitations on where this virtual fence can go.” When a producer makes an update in the app, the collar will reflect that change in about two minutes. NO FENCE POSTS, NO WIRE, NO PROBLEM Nofence’s latest virtual fencing collar enables producers to direct livestock movement, monitor herd activity, and reduce labor demands from a smartphone.
