Cattle Breeder Signs Deal With Russians

From The Star Phoenix

An agreement worth about $20 million to ship up to 10,000 head of purebred Charolais breeding stock from Canada to Russia has been signed by Hawkeye Land and Livestock Ltd. of Hodgeville, near Swift Current.

The deal between Northern Agro Industrial Co. and Hawkeye, a division of Cedarlea Farms of Hodgeville, will provide breeding stock to the Sevagro beef project in the Tver region of Russia.

Sevagro plans to build a fully integrated beef production business in the Tver region, about 250 kilometres north of Moscow, says a press release.

Hawkeye Land and Livestock Ltd. will be shipping Canadian Charolais breeding stock to Russia during the next three years, as well as providing other consulting services to the large agricultural project.

Garner Deobald, co-owner of Cedarlea Farms, who served as Canadian and world Charolais president, was contacted nearly two years ago to meet Alexei Sverdlov, the project manager, who was investigating the Canadian industry as a potential supplier of genetics and production management.

"It was because of their interest in looking at how we produce and manage our cattle here in Canada," Deobold said.
