Times may be tough for beef producers, with mandatory age verification, Country of Origin Labeling (COOL), drought, rising feed costs and a strong Canadian dollar all causing concern, but the chairman of the Alberta Beef Producers is encouraging them to continue on.
About 50 people turned up to listen to guest speaker and ABP chairman Rick Burton, and discuss issues regarding the fragile state of beef production in the province, at Grande Prairie's Stonebridge Hotel last night.
Burton's main message was an assurance that the industry will turn around, albeit without a specified timeframe.
"I think we're getting some momentum and I'm absolutely confident we're going to see this industry turn around, but it's not going to be tomorrow," he told the crowd.
"And, unfortunately, there's going to be some producers that just can't make it to the next pay day. A lot of producers are just going to liquidate the herd and sell their holdings and retire. It's unfortunate, but that's the economic reality."
