KLA : Beef Fest Feedlot, Carcass Contest Winners Announced

The Flint Hills Beef Fest recently recognized winners of the 2009 feedlot and carcass contests. Beef Fest showcases the grass cattle industry through several contests throughout the year.

Winners in the steer division of the feedlot contest were entered by Kevin Collins and Howard Wittker, Strong City . Heine Farms of Alma had the winning pen of three heifers. The steer carcass contest was won by a pen entry from Kent Schade of Olpe. Linsey Farms of Lebo entered the pen of three winning the heifer division.

The feedlot contest is based on weight gain of cattle coming off grass and going to the finishing phase. Cattle were fed for 124 days at Ingalls Feed Yard. Each cattle owner with entries in the carcass contest receives all collected data including dressing percent, ribeye area, marbling score, calculated quality grade, fat thickness, calculated yield grade and internal fat.
