2011 Horse Breeders and Owners Conference

Alberta’s horse industry and equine enthusiasts gather in Red Deer each January for the Horse Breeders and Owners Conference. The 29th annual conference will be held at Red Deer’s Capri Centre on January 14 to 16, 2011, and again feature internationally recognized speakers making presentations on a wide range of topics, an equine trade show with over 50 sponsoring businesses and organizations, and numerous opportunities for socializing and networking.

The heart of the conference is its strong educational program and 2011 is no exception. The first session begins Saturday morning and the last wraps up on Sunday afternoon. This year’s line up has something for everyone, no matter what your level or type of participation in the world of horses.

Conference sessions include:

  • Roxy Bell – Vaccination Programs for Horses in Western Canada
  • Peggy Brown – (1) Ride Your Bones; and (2) Getting Started in Driving & Moving Forwards in Competition
  • Patti Colbert – Attracting New People to Horses and Keeping Them Involved
  • Sid Gustafson – Equine Behavior - Appreciating Horses
  • Doug Householder – Behavioral Science at the Seat of Effective Horse Training
  • Linda Jesse – Managing Conflict (and How to Avoid it in the First Place)
  • Bob Kiser – The Effects of Footings on Horse, Rider & Sport
  • Lane Moore & Art Gallais – The Facts on Natural and Traditional Hoof Care
  • Josh Nichol – Find the Softness Within - Recognize the Tension You've Been Riding
  • Mike Scott – Preventing and Handling Suspensory Problems in Performance Horses
  • Carolyn Stull – Euthanasia Considerations for Horse Owners
  • Marijke van de Water – Healing Laminitis with Nutrition
  • Christie Ward – The Question of Cushings
  • Rich Wilcke – Getting Down to Business with Horses
  • News Hour – Focusing on current industry issues


Conference registration is $95 for an individual and $80 for additional registrants from the same farm if registering in advance. Registration is also available at the door and is $95 per person. Registration for students of post-secondary equine programs is $65.
