CentrePort To Export Canola, Soybeans

Manitoba-grown canola and soybeans could soon be headed to China through Centreport Canada.

Centreport announced this week that it has reached an agreement with CP and CN Rail, as well as two Chinese partners, Minsheng International Freight Co., which is China's largest private shipping company, and Shanghai Invent Logistic & Technology Co.

"Chinese buyers in particular are looking at canola, canola meal, soybeans and green peas," explains Centreport president and CEO Diane Gray. "So we're working with a number of producers in Manitoba to connect them with the buyers of these products."

Gray explains Centreport links rail, air and road transportation to accommodate trade.

"It's a 20,000 acre inland port that we're building in the northwest quadrant of Winnipeg. It basically brings together industrial space, with rapid development approvals, and connections to multiple modes of transportation," she explains.

This first agreement calls for the development of a new container-based system for shipping commodities into China. Shanghai Invent has pioneered the system that allows for rapid movement of containerized crops, having exported soybeans out of the Chicago-area since 2003.
