State Ag Secretary Hopeful About Future Of Dairy Industry

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wisconsin's secretary of agriculture says he's confident the Dairy State will keep that name in the future thanks to advances in education.

Secretary Ben Brancel is a dairy farmer himself, and says new programs like the Agriculture Center of Excellence in Wausau are a tipping point for the area. “We're already seeing more young famers come into the industry thanks to programs here in Wausau and around the state.”

Brancel says that while the average age of dairy farmers in the state is still climbing, it's the younger generations that are taking over family farms. The Farm Service Agency has been handing out more new dairy farm loans across the Badger State than anywhere else in the country.

Introducing the Livestock Guardian Dog to Sheep

Video: Introducing the Livestock Guardian Dog to Sheep

Our eleven month old livestock guardian dog, Sam, has been on the farm about three months and spent the entire time guarding our free-rage meat chickens. Now that we are done with chickens for the year, I needed to find a new job for Sam. In this video I introduce Sam to our sheep flock by first having spend a few days with a single ewe and then bringing the entire flock into his one acre paddock. After some chasing he settled down! I will give an update in a couple weeks once Sam and the flock are moved out to pasture.
