Growing up with an agriculture background is one
of the most common reasons for pursuing a career
in the agriculture industry, according to the AgCa-
2018 Candidate Experience Survey.
The survey also revealed that more than 70% of
respondents felt that employment in the ag indus-
try was as stable, or more stable than other indus-
tries.
How do most people search for a job nowadays?
It’s no surprise that online job searches have now
become standard for anyone looking to find a new
position. According to the Survey,
60% of those who are actively searching for a job,
search on a daily or weekly basis.
There are four main resources for job opportuni-
ties online:
1. Online searches (example searching “swine
jobs in Saskatchewan”)
2. Niche Job Boards (such as or
)
3. Company Websites (such as RME Rocky Mountain
Equipment or Farmers Edge)
4. National Job Boards (Service Canada)
While searching for a job has moved online, some
things never change. One offline resource that
remains relevant is networking and word of mouth
to learn about job opportunities with family and
friends. “Some of our best candidates for our last
two positions came in because our employees were
discussing opportunities with our company at their
gym,” says Denise Faguy with . If you are
looking for a position, be sure to mention it to
everyone who knows you.
Not surprisingly, the job responsibilities listed in
the position description are the most crucial factor
influencing a job seeker’s decision to apply for a job.
Applying for jobs that you are well-suite for does
take some effort. Job seekers report that it can
take them between half an hour to an hour to
submit each job application because they adapt
their resume and cover letter to the specifics of
each job.
The return on the hard work of looking for a new
