Easter Greetings from CFFO

Apr 17, 2014

The Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario would like to take a moment to wish its members and the agriculture community a blessed Easter. As farmers we are called to do many things as we carry out our chosen profession of producing things that people need – fuel, feed and fibre. As we pause for this important holiday, it is worth reflecting on how our beliefs impact how we approach the business of farming in Ontario today.

From the perspective of the CFFO, farmers are caretakers of the creation. Farmers in Ontario are blessed with great land, a moderate climate - although it doesn’t feel like it this year - and potential access to a plentiful supply of fresh water. Moreover, we have a peaceful society with plentiful food. It is our responsibility to ensure that the next generation of farmers are left with healthy soils, clean air and potable water so that we can sustain food production for Ontario and the wider world.

Many CFFO members believe that they are also called to open up the potential within the creation. We are blessed with the ability to learn new things about the creation and how to both nurture the environment and improve the productivity of the crops we grow and the animals we raise. The adoption of better management techniques and appropriate technology is essential to sustainable agriculture in the long-term.

For those farmers who raise livestock, CFFO members know that they are caretakers of the animals that are ultimately being used to feed people. These animals are not pets, but good husbandry recognizes that good living conditions result in healthier animals that are more productive and grow better over time. Livestock farmers have a symbiotic relationship with the livestock they raise, and the vast majority take pride in their work and the health of their animals.

Farmers are called to be responsible members of society in the way they approach their businesses. In this Easter Season, we can pause and reflect on why we do the things we do every day as farmers in Ontario. On behalf of CFFO, have a blessed Easter weekend and a blessed season in the fields.
