Georgia Milk producers increased production in the fourth quarter of 2014 and the state's cattle inventory remained steady according to reports from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
The NASS quarterly milk production report, released Jan. 30, showed Georgia milk production at 397 million pounds from October - December 2014, up 29 million pounds, an increase of 8 percent, from the same period in 2013. The state's inventory of milk cows rose slightly from 80,000 in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 81,000 in the fourth quarter of 2014.
The NASS Cattle Inventory Report, released Feb. 2, showed Georgia's overall number of cattle and calves on Jan. 1, 2015, at 1.04 million, unchanged from the inventory on Jan. 1, 2014.
The 2015 numbers include 83,000 beef replacement heifers, 25,000 milk replacement heifers and 34,000 heifers to be used for other purposes. Georgia's inventory of steers weighing 500 pounds or more increased from 36,000 in January 2014 to 45,000 in January 2015, a 25 percent increase.
