By Blair Fannin

President Obama is set to discuss efforts to normalize diplomatic relations with Cuba as part of Tuesday’s State of the Union Address.

WHO: Dr. Parr Rosson, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service economist and head of the department of agricultural economics at Texas A&M University in College Station, has expertise in international agricultural trade with special emphasis on Cuba and Texas agricultural exports.

IMPACT: U.S. agricultural exports to Cuba have the potential to be as much as $400 million to $500 million within the next two years if agreements are made.

Texas agriculture currently supplies Cuba with several limited export items, including chicken leg quarters and corn. Pork, cotton and dairy produced in Texas are also exported, and more rice exports are expected, according to Rosson.
