Some Farmers Waiting To Harvest Crops

Some farmers in the region are still waiting to get out in their fields to harvest their crops. Lorne Henry's a farmer in the Portage area, and he says the cold spring and late onset of warm weather means many are seeing delays.

"We're close to it now, there's a lot of grain turning pretty good. There's later crop too but a lot of the canola's starting to get ready to cut, some of the other stuff is of course not ready yet. We're in the very early stages. We should have been here before this. We're late, but that was caused by the late spring."

He says they're not expecting to see the crops as successful as previous years, noting the tough conditions in the spring.

"For the average condition out there and everything, we're certainly not as good as last year but some crops aren't too bad. We had a late, cold spring and it kept on showering. Some people got more showers than others which hindered them worse than the next guy but overall I think there are not too bad of crops out there."

Henry says despite the low expectations for this year's yield, there's still a chance they could have more than anticipated.

"We're hoping that when we get right out there, well we're never sure, until you get the combine out in the field, exactly where you're at. You have a good idea but the proof is in the pudding. Once you get them running, you really know what's happening."

He also notes some of his land was flooded out by the river, meaning those areas will be unable to be harvested.
