Sugar Beet Harvest

Oct 24, 2013

Still with crops, sugar beet yields are looking pretty good this fall. Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, agriculture superintendent for Lantic Sugar in Taber says they’re expecting an overall average to be 25 to 26 tonnes per acre.

On the quality side of things, Llewelyn-Jones says it’s not as good as it has been in the previous couple of years, with sugar content averaging 18.4 per cent as of a couple of weeks ago. He expects this year’s entire crop will be processed by the second or third week of January.

Last year growers harvested over 820,000 tonnes of sugar beets with an average sugar content of 19.1 per cent.
