“Train the Trainer” for Low Stress Pig Handling

Apr 15, 2014

Time for change:

Since 2000 I’ve been teaching Low Stress Pig Handling (LSPH) on farms, in slaughter plants, in trailers, and in the classroom. Even more importantly, I’ve been learning from the people in all those venues.

Clients have shown that given a sound understanding of Low Stress Pig Handling principles and some appropriate tools and support, they can make tremendous strides. It is time to spread that progress around.

We are offering:

-       What: a TRAIN THE TRAINER course:

-       Where: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the Delta Bessborough hotel

-       When: May 28 and 29, 2014.

-       What else: The course will be an intensive one and a half days, with a maximum class size of ten people.

-       Why: The intent of the Course is to equip participants with background knowledge plus take away video and print materials that will help them teach LSPH and apply it to the unique needs and circumstances of their work places.

The course will:

-          provide instructions on basic:

-                 Pig behavior and LSPH principles

-                 Effective communication and training techniques

-          use video case studies to lead group learning and allow participants to apply the above basic principles to a range of production, transport, and harvest plant situations

-          apply LSPH to: trouble shooting, handler safety, use of handling tools, and welfare audits

-          provide the participants with ?take home? videos and print materials that they can customize to their unique training needs

-          allow participants the opportunity to bring their own video for group evaluation

-          allow participants to learn from and network with others interested in LSPH

-

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

-          identify movement issues and opportunities in real life pig handling situations

-          use the provided material to coach LSPH techniques or supplement other programs such as TQA.

-          identify ways that their trainees can move pigs with less stress on pigs and people, reduce handler injuries (missed work days and Occupational Health and Safety incidents), and improve handler morale

-          use the experience to communicate with other LSPH handlers in problem solving

Summary:

“We do the best we can with what we know, and when we know better, we do better“ – Maya Angelou.

-

For me the ultimate reward is to see a light come on as a handler realizes his/her life and work can be so much easier.

-

We look forward to hearing from you.

Take care
