The Canadian “Code of Practices for the Care and Handling of Pigs” is currently being reviewed.

Rather than commenting at length myself, I’m providing links to the National Farm Animal Care Council’s website where you can find information and links outlining the review process and code development timelines for different commodity groups:

http://www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice

To check on the current status of the pig code review process you can either click on “pigs” on the left side of that page or use this next link:

http://www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/pigs

Links on both pages take you to more detailed information.

Part of the code review process is a 60 day public comment period which will be announced through press releases and commodity organizations. The draft code will be made available on the NFACC website along with a guide for providing feedback at that time.

In an item in the April/May 2012 edition of Prairie Hog Country, the Pig Code Development Committee’s Chair, Florian Possberg, said the Committee “is aiming to have a draft ready by this summer to circulate for comment and to have the final version printed and distributed by mid-2013.”

When you see notice that the draft code is available for public comment, do your part and get engaged in the public comment process.

That’s it for this week
Take care
