A coalition of dairy groups is launching a statewide program aimed at assuring consumers and retailers that they are taking good care of their cows.
Industry officials hope that the voluntary effort, known as the National Dairy FARM program, will be adopted by the state's 1,750 dairy farms.
"Responsible care and treatment of animals is a core value for our dairy families, and we know it's important to dairy consumers," said Bill Van Dam, chairman of the statewide coalition Dairy Cares.
Over the past several years, livestock producers have come under increased scrutiny from animal-rights activists, consumers and retailers over animal-welfare issues.
"The retailers have been insisting for some verification that the animals are being well cared for," Van Dam said. "And this is an attempt to have something like that."
