U T Extension Service Horse and Forage Seminars


The Shelby County Extension Office will be offering a series of programs for horse owners. The seminars will include some demonstrations, and the programs are very informative. All programs begin at 6:00 p.m.

On March 2nd: Equine Nutrition-Bridgett McIntosh/ Dr. Ginger Rich/Becky Muller. See the differences in grains, how to select and feed grain, the benefits of weighing rations, how to weight tape your horse for feeding accurate rations. We will have scales on hand, as well as a variety of feeds, and demo horses to practice getting weights on. The meeting will be held at the Agricenter Showplace Arena Meeting Place and Warm nUp Barn.

March 9th: Pond Management- Ron Blair/Becky Muller. This program will teach Weed ID, Aquatic Herbicides, Fertility, Fish Balances, and Aeration. If you have an aquatic weed you need identified, please bring it to the meeting as well as any pond water samples you would like to know the pH of. The meeting will be held in the Extension Office Conference Room

April 27th: Buying and Feeding Hay-Brian White/ Becky Muller. What to look for when purchasing hay, weighing bales, forage testing, reading forage tests, weighing rations, weight taping your horse. We will have different bales at this meeting to demonstrate the different sizes hay bales come in, scales to weigh both bales and hay rations, and horses to demonstrate how to weight tape your horse for feeding correct amount of forage. This meeting will be held at the Agricenter Showplace Arena Warm Up Barn and Meeting Place.

July 6th: New Equine De-Worming Strategies-Dr. Stephen Galloway/Becky Muller. We will have different classes of de-wormers to discuss which wormer to use when, a microscope display to demonstrate fecal sampling for timely de-worming, and slides of different worms your horse may have. This demonstration will be held at the Agricenter Banquet Room C Wing.

September 14th: Pastures, Winter Weed Control and Cool Season Forages- Brian White/Becky Muller. We will discuss winter weed ID, herbicides for winter weed control, fertility, and using cool season forages. This meeting will be held at the Agricenter Banquet Room C Wing.
