In advance of the meeting Mitchell told Ontario Farmer it will be an important opportunity for her to meet with her ministerial colleagues to discuss the key issues facing the agriculture and food sectors on the national scene. “It is important to build these relationships as we address the challenges and opportunities facing Canadian producers and processors,” she said.
Mitchell said the top priorities will be to review progress on the key commitments made at the annual gathering of the ministers in Niagara on the Lake last July - “specifically relating to a strategic review of business risk management (BRM) programs and national initiatives relating to food safety and traceability,” she said.
Mitchell said Ontario is prepared to facilitate forward progress and says a significant step forward was taken last week by hosting a Traceability Forum in Guelph and announcing a farm-level biosecurity program that will facilitate premises identification registration by making it an eligibility requirement for Growing Forward programs.
