AgTech fuels Canada’s economic recovery

AgTech fuels Canada’s economic recovery

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times—how AgTech can resolve some of a farmer’s issues per David Guthrie of KPMG.

It’s official—AgTech is helping fuel Canada’s economic recovery.

That was the message given by David Guthrie, National Leader, Agribusiness and Partner with KPMG in Canada at the the 2021 Farms.com-sponsored virtual Precision Agriculture Conference & Ag Technology Showcase held November 16-18.

For those wondering just what the heck an accounting firm knows about the world of AgTech, Guthrie himself provided the answer—plenty.

“At KPMG, we’re more than numbers, audits and tax returns,” he explained. “We work with clients to (help them and us) understand the latest trends and technologies that will help make their business better.”

Guthrie began his presentation with a dive into how the world of agriculture from food production to distribution has recently undergone a lot of stress—especially supply chain challenges due to COVID-19.

“But,” noted Guthrie, “where there are challenges, there are also opportunities.”

The presentation evoked the old adage: “May you live in interesting times”, which was once a curse per ancient Chinese lore, but is now seen in an opposite way because human beings thrive on science to help lead us to the next opportunity.

“Although it is a very exciting time to be a farmer, it is also a very challenging time,” Guthrie began, but also noted that “AgTech can solve some of those business problems.”
