As seeding continues in Manitoba, some producers are wondering whether or not it's too early to seed canola.
Canola Council of Canada agronomy specialist Angela Brackenreed says it's a tough question, but right now seed bed conditions are generally quite nice across the province. However the forecast is calling for more hot and dry weather, which Brackenreed says could pose as a concern.
"Seed bed conditions could start going backward quite quickly, so if the thought process was, 'Okay, I'm going to wait for a more acceptable, less risky calendar date to seed my canola,' then at that point, there is that potential the seed bed could be quite dry. Then you're stuck with the question of, what do I do? Do I seed deep to moisture, do I leave it at 3/4 of an inch or an inch and hope we get some rain?" Brackenreed says.
Brackenreed says historically right now is a good time to seed canola in terms of reaching high yields, but there is also still a risk that a frost event could happen. Brackenreed says it is possible we could see a repeat in last year's extreme frost event, but it's historically not normal.
