Stripe Rust Present In Virginia

Stripe rust has been confirmed in Shirley wheat in the Southern part of the Eastern shore of VA.  Shirley is highly susceptible to stripe rust.  Growers in MD and DE should check their wheat resistance ratings for stripe rust and plan on scouting fields on a weekly basis.  Given the growth stage of wheat and forecasted weather, there is a chance that we may see the disease in parts of the states on susceptible varieties prior to flag leaf.

If you planted a variety susceptible to stripe rust you should consider a fungicide application if disease is detected nearby.  DMI products will provide excellent control against stripe rust, but premixes with a QoI (group 11) component may provide slightly greater residual control.  Knowing your variety and it’s resistance level to stripe rust is key in determining if this disease is a significant concern for you or your growers.   Please contact myself or your local county agent if you suspect you have stripe rust.
